Google Trends: edmonton oilers
Clearly from this trend you see the huge impact the acquisition of Dick Tarnstrom had on the popularity of the Oilers. This is not surprising, given the massive excitement the trade created in Hockeytown North, aka Edmonton, Alberta. The papers without fail call him the "oft-celebrated Dick Tarnstrom" and his now-former teammates had labelled him "Dicky Fancy-Pants". Of course this latter moniker had a lot to do with the shimmering, sequin-covered velour trousers he liked to wear on game days.
Alas, it was the trousers that proved to be his ticket out of town as well, as a falling out over washing said trousers led coach Craig MacTavish to refuse to coach the Swedish fashion-plate next year. His trading will undoubtedly lead to the Oilers returning to obscurity, at least in Google terms, if not also on the ice and in the hearts of their fans. Damn you stupid sexy Dick Tarnstrom!!
